The Burnet High School boys soccer team shut out Florence 6-0 Jan. 30 after losing to Lago Vista 6-2 Jan. 28 in a match that was played a day later because of icy conditions.
Both matches were in District 25-4A play.
Against Florence, the Bulldogs got goals from Marco Campos-Huerta, Nathan Burrell, Jose Garcia, Andre Soto, Alvaro Rodriguez and Ricardo Flores.
The Bulldogs lost in Florence a year ago, so the returners vowed that it wouldn’t happen again, head coach Benjamin Boorman said.
“It really shows me that we’re continuing to improve as the season goes on,” he said. “The young players are getting better and the team is a good team. They just have to believe in themselves and play like they should.”
Boorman said school district officials at both Burnet and Lago Vista believed it was best to play the night of Jan. 28 even though classes had been canceled for that day.
“What I saw were two pretty evenly matched teams, skill wise, and I think a group of boys at Lago took better care of themselves over the break during the freeze than my boys,” Boorman said. “My boys were lackadaisical and looked like they weren’t ready to run and just didn’t give it their full effort. I don’t know if they were able to (get out and play). Based upon their condition, because I hadn’t seen them in six days, they had been stuck inside their houses.”
Still not all was lost.
“It gave me a great opportunity to see what we need to work on for the next day,” the. coach said. “And we had an awesome day to practice (Jan. 30).”
He used that to prepare the Bulldogs for Florence.
“It helped us to refocus,” the coach said. “My group of boys needs need more direction, and they need school. And that’s what we all learned. They need that consistency, and it helps them grow to be better people.”
